August, 2008

Goat Project: During the month of August, our goat farmers transplanted fodder seedlings from prepared nursery beds, into their gardens. Due to the growing herd size, project beneficiaries have asked WCFJC to support/fund the digging of a borehole closer to their homes. This will decrease the effort and time spent in collecting water from the nearest well, about 1.5 kilometers away.

Poultry Project:

August saw the project’s lowest production numbers since its inception. A loss of US$ 1,202 was recorded. Some of the decline could be due to the birds’ natural laying cycle. Much of it however, can be traced to the two poultry houses that report losses every month as well as the general unrest and lack of focus among beneficiaries following last month’s incident with the beneficiary who saw fit to sell project birds without authorization. Focus should return during the month of September.

We continue to monitor the pulse of our beneficiaries and note that with the exception of the poultry houses that are running at a loss (two of eleven), all other beneficiaries are content to “stick with the program” until December, the designated end of this phase of the project. A series of group meetings will be held to determine the Way Forward for the poultry houses that have been operating at a loss for the last several months.
