WCFJC News
February, 2008
Nursery School: The nursery/primary school opened on February 4, 2008 with a total of 90 pupils: nursery = 51, primary one = 19, primary two = 20.
Goat Project: WCFJC Trainers will conduct their 1st Goat Management Workshop in March 2008. 3 Trainers have been assigned to train a group of 30 in Namagera Village. Upon completion of the training, each trainee will be required to do the following in order to qualify for an 100% local doe:
- Construct a goat shed in the homestead at their own expense
- Plant fodder for the goat to feed on
- Plant a vegetable garden
- Construct a pit latrine
Other developments are as follows:
- A project beneficiary sold off a young cross bred buck for US$ 100 and used the proceeds to open a retail shop, thus diversifying his income base.
- Two project beneficiaries signed contracts worth US$ 5 per month each, for the supply of goat milk. This may not seem like a lot of money but it is more than they had before, which makes it meaningful. $5 will purchase a full dose of treatment for malaria. Alternatively, $10 (2 month’s earnings) will purchase a mosquito net that will greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for malaria treatment.
- WCFJC welcomed its first 50% cross bred deliveries (3 bucks & 1 doe) from the batch of 100% local does distributed in August 2008.
Poultry Project: Profits banked on beneficiary account = US$ 78. The low profits can be traced to lower egg production in February (1,111 trays versus 1,382 in January) as well as the expenses incurred in replacing the coffee husks used to line the projects 11 poultry houses.
Hair Salon Project: February 2008 earnings: US$ 82.
