January, 2008

Nursery School: Congratulations are due to the nursery school which will admit its first primary one and two pupils in February 2008. There is bound to be a name change in the very near future – nursery to primary school! Expected number of students = 90.

Goat Project: WCFJC is pleased to welcome Jenny (named after the donor), our new 100% exotic toggenburg buck purchased from FARM Africa, Mbale. Jenny was 10 months old at the time of purchase and will soon be working hard to expand the WCFJC herd. WCFJC wishes to thank Jenny Tung, USA for the generous donation that purchased the buck. Jenny will reside in WCFJC’s Nakakulwe Bulondo project where he replaces Jolly (our 1st buck). Jolly moves on to Namagera, a village where we will run a Goat Management Workshop in March 2008, prior to the distribution of 25 100% local does.

We lost another cross bred doe during the month of January. The project beneficiaries are becoming a little slack in their care of the animals. This is one of the reasons why WCFJC has resorted to purchasing and distributing the sturdier and more disease resistant 100% local does. The local does will be mated with 100% exotic toggenburg bucks (Jenny and Jolly pictured above). By the time the local does deliver cross-bred offspring, project beneficiaries will be more experienced in goat-rearing. This we hope will reduce the mortality rate.

Poultry Project: Profits banked on beneficiary account = US$ 1,212. At this time, 50% of sales revenue goes towards the purchase of pre-mixed feeds. This must change. WCFJC is working to increase the level of egg production and decrease the cost of feeds.

Hair Salon Project: The salon now operates in 3 different locations. Project beneficiaries have further identified a plot of land which if purchased, will enable one of the salons to operate in an independent setting – separate from the Chairperson’s home where it currently operates. January 2008 earnings: US$ 103.
