WCFJC News

July, 2009

We are pleased to announce that in July we received a grant in the amount of US$ 12,000 from the Global Fund for Women, San Francisco. The funds will be used to meet program administrative expenses in Uganda.

Goat Program:
This month we finally identified a suitable builder (Mr. Peter Nkurunziza) for the WCFJC Dairy Goat Breeding Center to be located in Butagaya sub-county, Jinja District. The construction and maintenance of the center during its first year of operation are funded by MoneyGram International headquartered in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Construction will be completed in August 2009 for a September 2009 opening.

The center will be home to 5 100% exotic dairy she-goats and 1 100% exotic he-goat and will also serve as a training center for WCFJC beneficiaries and paying members of the public. The center will further yield the following benefits:

  • 100% exotic offspring will be distributed to WCFJC beneficiaries and will also be available for sale to the general public.
  • 100% local goats distributed to neighboring WCFJC beneficiaries will be brought to the center for breeding. The resulting cross bred does will be raised for their milk. The resulting cross bred bucks will be castrated and sold for meat.
  • Milk from the 100% exotic lactating dairy she-goats will be sold to cover center expenses.

Other news includes the birth of a cross-bred doe, bringing our total herd size to 70. Additionally, one of our beneficiaries sold a 75% exotic buck for US$ 125 and used the proceeds to purchase 3,000 bricks that she will use to build a new house!

Poultry Program:
9 WCFJC beneficiaries continue to make preparations for the delivery of day-old chicks early in September.

Hair Salon Program:
We continue to see an upward trend in sales.

Water Program:
One of the four communities identified for boreholes has collected the required $50 contribution from its members. Kisakye Women’s Group (due to receive local she-goats in the next month or so) will be the first of our beneficiary groups to benefit from the government’s District Water Program. Exact dates for project launch are yet to be determined.
