June, 2008

Goat Project: This month WCFJC celebrated the first “passing on” of a female kid to another project beneficiary. You may be aware that each beneficiary who receives a doe from WCFJC agrees to pass on one of its female offspring to another beneficiary. This contributes to project sustainability. It also ensures that beneficiaries do not think that WCFJC simply distributes handouts, with no contribution from beneficiaries whatsoever.

The month of June also saw the demise of yet another of our 50% exotic does. This brings total goat deaths under the project to 5, since its launch in 2006.

A recent Foot and Mouth Disease Quarantine issued by the Ministry of Agriculture bans the movement of livestock from one region to another. Consequently, beneficiaries recently trained in Goat Management are not able to receive their goats. In May 2008, we reported that 10 of these trainees had met our pre-allocation requirements. The pictures below show some of their efforts in this regard:

Poultry Project: During the month of June, spot checks revealed that some of the project participants do not feed their poultry on a regular schedule. We learned that some birds are fed only once a day owing to poor team dynamics among some beneficiaries. This no doubt, accounts for the incredibly low egg production figures in some of the poultry houses. To counter this, WCFJC will continue conducting unannounced spot checks. We have also invited participants who feel they no longer want to be part of the project to step forward and be relieved of their responsibilities.

A loss of US$ 115 was registered in June 2008. Low egg production and the ever increasing cost of pre-mixed feeds account for the loss. WCFJC is now aggressively seeking funding to set up its own feeds mixing center. This should bring down the cost of feeds by up to 50%.

Hair Salon Project: This project continues to show a positive trend in earnings.
