Visiting Volunteers: In August 2007 we were privileged to host Sri Arumugam from Florida, USA for a day. Sri was in Uganda volunteering with a rural-based IT project for 3 months.

Poultry Project: In July 2007, WCFJC distributed 2,000 day old chicks to 60 beneficiaries who had just completed our poultry rearing program. The beneficiaries had previously formed eleven clusters among themselves, with each cluster constructing a poultry house to accommodate the birds assigned to it. The eleven houses will compete against each other and a prize will be awarded to the most profitable poultry house at the end of every 6 month period.
At two months old (July – September), the birds are doing incredibly well. The number is down from 2,000 to 1,937 for a variety of reasons including a rat infestation in one of the poultry houses. Our Vet advises us however, that the number of birds should be stable, going forward. |

Goat Project: Although WCFJC trained 25 beneficiaries in goat rearing techniques, our budget allowed us to purchase only 11 goats (1 buck and 10 does) in November 2006. The animals were distributed to 10 beneficiaries who have achieved the following results:
1) Live births – 8 (including one set of twins)
2) Still births - 1
3) 4 does expected to deliver over the next 2 - 3 months
4) Deaths – 2 (1 from liver fluke disease and 1 from choking on a plastic bag) |

| In September 2007, WCFJC distributed another 9 does (100% local) to the beneficiaries who had missed out in November 2006. These does will all be mated with the 100% exotic buck that was purchased last year. The total number of goats distributed to date is 19. Each beneficiary has signed an agreement to give their 2nd female offspring to WCFJC in form of “payment” for the animal received. |
